"Richard by Kathryn" Review

Richard by Kathryn

When Richard wrote "Himoff! The Memoirs of a TV Matinee Idle" back in 2000, he explained that it was not an autobiography, and what this book, written by his partner Kathryn Apanowicz with help from family friend Iain Johnstone, does is to fill in the gaps left by him six years ago, which were perhaps intended for later public consumption.

As well as enlarging upon many of the events outlined in "Himoff!" (such as Richard's life at school and university, his time at ITN, and his experiences at Yorkshire Television), this book also includes much more information about his family, his many friends, and the various relationships he was in during his life.

While much of the information contained in the book will be known to many of Richard's fans, there is also plenty that is not so widely known, and personally I felt that it provided a much greater insight into the man who was Richard, and perhaps a little more of what made him tick. What comes over quite strongly is that he was both a very private man - from a family who suffered quite a few tragedies in a relatively short space of time - and also someone who enjoyed some of the trappings of a celebrity life and a good party.

Certain sections of the book are contributed by various friends and relations of Richard's, and while this 'interview' style flows quite well, and adds a very personal touch to much of the text, I did on occasion find it difficult to remember who was 'speaking' the words from time to time. In addition, there are a few typographical errors (such as the renaming of former Countdown hostess Cathy Hytner as Cathy 'Hutner' and Dictionary Corner guest Gyles Brandreth as 'Giles'), which I feel could have been picked up when the book was being edited, but these are both minor gripes.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the book and found it very easy to read. As well as being very informative, it is at times very moving. I would recommend that anyone who was a fan of Richard, and who felt like they lost a friend when he passed away last June, pick up a copy or ask for one to be placed in their Christmas stocking - I don't think you will be disappointed; it's just a shame this book had to be written so soon.

This review was written in October 2006.
